چکیده

Our overall objective is to improve the productivity of Mars rovers by increasing the exibility and robustness of their autonomous behavior. To achieve this objective, we set out to increase the on-board autonomy of rovers and enable commanding at a higher level with a more exible command language. In February, 1999, we demonstrated some of our rover autonomy technologies as part of a Marsokhod rover eld test that simulated aspects of the Mars '01{'05 missions. In this paper, we present the commanding language employed in this eld test, called the Contingent Rover Language (CRL), and describe the ground tools and on-board executive capabilities that were developed to generate and execute CRL plans. A key feature of CRL is that it enables the encoding of contingent plans specifying what to do if a failure occurs, as well as what to do if a serendipitous science opportunity arises.

Autonomous Rovers for Human Exploration of Mars

Autonomous rovers are a critical element for the success of human exploration of Mars. The robotic tasks required for human presence on Mars are beyond the ability of current rovers; these tasks include landing-site scouting and mining, as well as emplacement and maintenance of a habitat, fuel production facility, and power generator. These tasks are required before and also during human presen...

Overview of the Mars Exploration Rovers’ Autonomous Mobility and Vision Capabilities

NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers have set the standard for autonomous robotic exploration of planetary surfaces. Their abilities to detect and avoid geometric hazards, and measure and compensate for slip or heading changes, have made it possible to drive farther and in highly sloped areas, increasing the science return of the mission. Software updates that took place during the more than three ye...

Vision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers

Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...

Long-Range Rovers for Mars Exploration and Sample Return

This paper discusses long-range rovers to be flown as part of NASA’s newly reformulated Mars Exploration Program (MEP). These rovers are currently scheduled for launch first in 2007 as part of a joint science and technology mission, and then again in 2011 as part of a planned Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission. These rovers are characterized by substantially longer range capability than their pre...

An Analytical Approach of Mars Rovers by Using GPU Technology and Genetic Algorithm

Mars Rovers are the unmanned machines on planet MARS which are send to analyze and provide details about the planet. GPU and Genetic Algorithms are upcoming technologies used in Mars Rovers for analyzing and sending the data back to the Earth base station. GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit in which Image compression is the basic layout of the technology. Image compression involves WAVELET...
